Know your Battle of Britain fighters – the Spitfire, Hurricane and the Defiant were the planes that defeated the Luftwaffe in 1940.

This chart shows how onlookers could identify the main British fighter aircraft of the 1940s from various angles. Recognising which aircraft were friendly and which were not was a crucial skill in wartime in order to respond quickly to German attacks.

In the summer of 1940, Britain battled for survival against Hitler’s war machine; the result would define the course of the Second World War. It is known simply as The Battle of Britain.
