With a history stretching over 1,100 years, The Royal Mint is the second oldest mint in the world and the oldest company in the UK. The Royal Mint has struck coins for every one of England and Britain’s 61 monarchs, creating an unrivalled collection of coins in the process, each one with its own history to unravel. Many of these historic coins have increased in value over time, making them ideal collector’s items too.

Dan Snow and the History Hit team will be granted rare access to the hidden treasures kept behind the doors at The Royal Mint Museum and discover the stories behind some of the rarest and most valuable coins ever made in British history.

Rebecca Morgan, Director of Collector Services at The Royal Mint, comments: “We are delighted to work with Dan, a name synonymous with history, and the History Hit team for this series. As our museum is not open to the public, we’ll be taking him behind the scenes to view some of the rarest and most fascinating coins in our collection, sharing the stories of these miniature pieces of art.”

Dan Snow says of the partnership: “Coins are literally history in the palm of your hand, so I’m thrilled to have been given the opportunity by The Royal Mint to access some of the rarest coins in their collection and hear the stories behind them. Coins remain such an important part of our history and are fascinating collector’s pieces.

“In our increasingly digital world, it’s a great time to reconnect with coins, and I can’t wait to discover the incredible stories behind rare and spectacular coins such as The Gold Noble and the Henry the VII Sovereign. With the team at History Hit, we will reveal the fascinating role that coins have played throughout British history”.

Chris Barker, historian at the Royal Mint Museum takes Dan through some of the rarest coins in the collection from within the vaults, unravelling what the coinage reveals about monarchs from the Norman conquest right through to the 20th century, including the coins created for Edward VIII but were never released in light of his abdication.
